Hattasan Son'eiji Temple is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in Fukuroi City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and is one of the three Enshu mountains famous for warding off evil spirits. It is a staple of Fukuroi tourism, where you can enjoy the four seasons with its famous yakuyoke dango dumplings, the summer Manto Festival, and the Wind Chime Festival.
This historic temple was built by order of Emperor Shomu in 725 AD.
It is said to have been founded by Gyoki in 725, the second year of the Jinki era during the Nara period, and is the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect. The Great Main Hall, reached by a long flight of stone steps, houses the statue of Kannon Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva of Mercy, believed to ward off evil and bring good fortune. The temple is bustling with worshippers throughout the year, from New Year's visits to prayers for protection from misfortune and collecting temple seals. The temple grounds are home to many attractions, including the Niomon Gate, Benzaiten Hall, and Aizen Hall, and the approach to the temple is decorated with lush trees and seasonal flowers.

Hodasan is famous for its "yakuyoke dango," a simple skewered dumpling smothered in honey and kinako (roasted soybean flour). Freshly made at the teahouse, these delicious dumplings are exceptional. On each month's Merit Day, limited-edition "cha dango" (tea dumplings) made with Fukuroi tea are also available (while supplies last). It's easy to pick up souvenirs after your visit, and we also recommend taking a break on one of the temple grounds' benches.

Seasonal events are also appealing. During the "Manto Festival" on July 9th and 10th, a sea of lanterns appears in front of the main hall, creating a fantastic summer night view. From early to late summer, wind chimes sway throughout the temple grounds as part of the "Enshu Sanzan Wind Chime Festival." You can also donate wind chimes for prayers. By touring Kasui-sai and Yusan-ji Temple in addition, you can experience Fukuroi's temple and shrine culture and cool scenery all at once.

[Trivia]
- "Yakuyoke Dango" (Evil-warding Dango) is a local specialty, and its origins are said to date back to the Edo period, when the shogunate bestowed the name "Kushi Dango" (Kushi-dango).

[Hidden Gems]
