Asukadera is Japan's oldest authentic Buddhist temple, founded by Soga no Umako in the 4th year of Emperor Suiko (596).

Asuka-dera is a temple that represents the culture of the Asuka period and houses many valuable cultural assets. The Asuka Daibutsu enshrined in the main hall is one of the largest Buddhist statues of the Asuka period, and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. In the precincts of Asuka-dera, there are also the Asuka-e (paintings of Asuka) left in the cloister of Horyuji Kondo, and the remnants of the time when Soga clan prospered as a temple of the Soga clan.

The area around the temple has a peaceful atmosphere with rural scenery and a small hill called Amakashi-no-oka.

There are also many ruins such as the Ishibutai Kofun and Takamatsuzuka Kofun nearby.
