Taima-dera is a temple known for the legend of Chujohime's lotus thread mandala (Taima Mandala). After the death of her father, Prince Shotoku, Princess Chujo followed her father's wishes and completed her Taima Mandala. Taima Mandala is the best Buddhist painting in Japan at that time and designated as a national treasure.
Taima-dera Temple is an ancient temple with a large monastery from the Hakuho and Tenpyo periods, and houses many valuable cultural properties. Starting with the Taima Mandala, the principal image of worship, Hakuho art such as Mirokubutsu, Shitenno (Four Heavenly Kings), and temple bells in the Kondo have been handed down to the present day. In addition, the pair of east and west three-storied pagodas is the only existing building in Japan as an ancient three-storied pagoda.
