Kurama Temple is a sacred place of mountain worship, located on a sacred mountain where the legend of Tengu remains. In this mystical space surrounded by nature, you can feel the magnificent history and energy of the universe. It is located in Kurama, the terminus of the Eizan Electric Railway Kurama Line.
Located in Kurama Honmachi, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kurama Temple is the head temple of the Kurama Propagation Sect, said to have been founded by the monk Kantei in the first year of the Houki era (770). It has long been known as the place where the legend of Kurama Tengu and Minamoto no Yoshitsune trained as Ushiwakamaru in his childhood, and is shrouded in a mystical atmosphere. The entire temple is located on Mount Kurama, and the approach to the temple is a natural mountain path that has been left intact. You can take a cable car from Eizan Electric Railway Kurama Station, passing through the Niomon Gate and up to the Tahoto Pagoda, but if you walk up the approach, you can feel the nature and history of Mount Kurama more deeply while visiting numerous historical sites such as Yuki Shrine and the "Kinoe Path."

There are many stairs, so you will need physical strength.

There is a cable car, but it does not go all the way to the top, and there is "Yuki Shrine" on the way, so if you are confident in your physical strength, it may be better to walk up. It is also fine to take it easy on the way there and walk back.

If you want to go trekking or mountain climbing, there is also a course (1-2 hours) from Kurama Temple to Kifune Shrine.

Nearby is Kurama Onsen, which can also be used as a day trip hot spring.

[Hidden Spot]
The "Tree Root Path" that leads from the main hall to the inner sanctuary of the Demon King is a complex tangle of tree roots that seem to have risen out of the ground, and is said to be the place where Ushiwakamaru learned swordsmanship from a tengu. It has a mysterious atmosphere and is perfect for forest bathing. In addition, Yuki Shrine's "Osugi-san" is a giant tree that is over 800 years old, and its power is overwhelming.

[Useful points of concern] The entire mountain is within the grounds of Kurama Temple, and there are steep uphill slopes and stone steps to the main hall. Even if you use the cable car, you will need to walk from the station to Niomon Gate and from Tahoto Station to the main hall, so if you are not confident in your physical strength, be careful.
