Daitokuji Temple is the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism in the Kita Ward of Kyoto City. It was destroyed during the Onin War but was rebuilt by Zen master Ikkyu, and is deeply connected to the culture of the tea ceremony.
Daitokuji, located in Murasakino, Kita-ku, Kyoto, is a Zen temple founded in 1315 by Shuho Myocho (Daitō Kokushi). In addition to the main temple, there are more than 20 sub-temples (sub-temples) scattered throughout the vast grounds, each with its own garden and cultural assets. Daitokuji is particularly closely associated with warlords and tea masters of the Warring States period, such as Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Sen no Rikyu, and many of the sub-temples were built or restored by them. Many of the sub-temples are usually closed to the public, but they are sometimes opened to the public on special seasonal days, during which time you can get up close and personal with the beautiful gardens and valuable cultural assets.

Daitokuji is closely related to the tea ceremony culture, and many of the sub-temples are where Sen no Rikyu built his teahouse or where gardens related to him remain. The Sanmon Gate (Sanmon) in the temple grounds is also known as the scene of a tragedy in which Sen no Rikyu enraged Toyotomi Hideyoshi by placing his own wooden statue on the upper level of the gate, which he had donated, and ordered him to commit seppuku. The spacious grounds are enveloped in a quiet and calm atmosphere, and you can enjoy a leisurely stroll while feeling the spirit of Zen.

This is a must-visit place for those interested in Japanese Zen culture, tea ceremony, and the history of the Sengoku period.

The parking lot is on the east side.

Imamiya Shrine is located very close to the northwest side, and Kinkakuji Temple is located nearby on the west side.

[Trivia]

Daitokuji is not included in the Kyoto Five Mountains, but it is also famous for being restored by Ikkyu Sojun, who is known as the model for the character "Ikkyu-san," after it was devastated during the Onin War. The episode of Sen no Rikyu placing his own wooden statue on top of the Sanmon Gate is also an essential historical event in talking about his relationship with Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
