The modern dry landscape garden "Honbo Garden (Hojō Garden)" designed by landscape designer Mirei Shigemori is also a must-see, and you can enjoy different atmospheres throughout the four seasons. The vast grounds are dotted with buildings of great historical value, such as the national treasure Sanmon Gate and Japan's oldest Zen hall, and there are many things to see, offering a valuable experience of experiencing Zen culture.
On the other hand, there are also disadvantages to consider.
The biggest concern is the extraordinary crowds during the autumn leaves season (usually from mid- to late November). Tsutenkyo Bridge is particularly popular, and the flow of people can be stagnant, making it difficult to leisurely enjoy the scenery or take photos.
Access is relatively good, but you will have to walk a bit from the nearest station.
[Trivia]
The name Tofukuji is said to have been taken from one character each of Todai-ji Temple and Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara.
[Hidden gem]
From Gaun-kyo Bridge, located beyond Tsuten-kyo Bridge, you can see Tsuten-kyo Bridge and the autumn leaves beyond, making it a relatively quiet spot.
Tsutenkyo Bridge and Kaisan-do are 600 yen for adults
Honbo Garden (Hojo) is 500 yen for adults
If you want to visit both, there is a 1,000 yen joint admission ticket (normal period).
During the autumn foliage season, Tsutenkyo Bridge and Kaisan-do may be 1,000 yen.
