Tofukuji Temple is known as one of the largest Zen temples in Kyoto, and attracts many tourists with its stunning beauty, especially in autumn when the leaves change color. Historical buildings, such as the Sanmon Gate, one of the oldest and largest in Japan, are also worth seeing.
The great advantage of Tofukuji Temple is its grand scale and beautiful scenery. In particular, the "Tsūten Autumn Leaves" seen from Tsutenkyo Bridge is famous as one of Kyoto's best spots for viewing autumn leaves, with about 2,000 maple trees spreading out in one direction. The valley, with its gradations of red and yellow, is a truly breathtaking sight and photogenic.

The modern dry landscape garden "Honbo Garden (Hojō Garden)" designed by landscape designer Mirei Shigemori is also a must-see, and you can enjoy different atmospheres throughout the four seasons. The vast grounds are dotted with buildings of great historical value, such as the national treasure Sanmon Gate and Japan's oldest Zen hall, and there are many things to see, offering a valuable experience of experiencing Zen culture.

On the other hand, there are also disadvantages to consider.
The biggest concern is the extraordinary crowds during the autumn leaves season (usually from mid- to late November). Tsutenkyo Bridge is particularly popular, and the flow of people can be stagnant, making it difficult to leisurely enjoy the scenery or take photos.
Access is relatively good, but you will have to walk a bit from the nearest station.

[Trivia]
The name Tofukuji is said to have been taken from one character each of Todai-ji Temple and Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara.

[Hidden gem]
From Gaun-kyo Bridge, located beyond Tsuten-kyo Bridge, you can see Tsuten-kyo Bridge and the autumn leaves beyond, making it a relatively quiet spot.
