Mononobe Shrine is the Ichinomiya of Iwami Province and has long been revered as the most prestigious shrine in the area. The main deity is Umashimaji no Mikoto, a war god who appears in Japanese mythology and is the ancestor of the Mononobe clan, who were in charge of military affairs for the Yamato Imperial Court. For this reason, the shrine is worshiped as a god of long-lasting military fortune, soul-calming, and protection from misfortune.

The grounds are solemn, lined with old cedar trees, and enveloped in a sacred atmosphere. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1819 and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The intricate carvings and magnificent decorations are overwhelming to behold. In addition, the treasure hall displays items and historical materials related to the Mononobe clan, and is especially recommended for those interested in ancient Japanese history.
