Daishoin is the head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism and the head temple (a temple established to manage the shrine) of Itsukushima Shrine. It is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple with a history of over 1,200 years since its founding.
Daihonzan Daishoin is a prestigious temple that was also the head temple of Itsukushima Shrine, said to have been founded by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) in 806 AD. Located at the foot of Mt. Misen, it is the oldest temple on Miyajima and has long been a place of worship for the imperial family and those in power. The temple grounds are dotted with numerous buildings, including the main hall, Daishi Hall, Kannon Hall, and Maniden Hall, and are home to a wide variety of Buddha and arhat statues.

Daishoin's appeal is not only its history and deep faith, but also the many things to see. There are plenty of unique sights to see, such as the "Ichigan Daishi," which is said to bring good fortune if you turn it while making a wish, the "Gohyaku Rakan," which features about 500 arhat statues with various expressions, and the Tibetan Buddhist-style "Henjokutsu." From the elevated grounds, you can get a beautiful view of Itsukushima Shrine and the Seto Inland Sea, which is especially spectacular on clear days.

This is a recommended place for those who want to experience the depth of Miyajima's history and culture after visiting Itsukushima Shrine. It is also famous as a power spot, and the quiet space will refresh both body and mind.
