Tendai sect Shoren-in Monzeki, also known as Awata Gosho, is a prestigious temple located in Higashiyama, Kyoto City. It is one of the three temples of the Tendai sect and is known as a temple with deep ties to the Imperial family, with successive imperial family members serving as chief priests. The temple grounds are enveloped in a quiet and solemn atmosphere, allowing you to spend a peaceful time away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The greatest attraction of Shoren-in is the pond garden, Kachoden Garden, which is said to have been created by Kobori Enshu. This garden, which can be enjoyed in every season, is colored with azalea in spring and autumn leaves in autumn, and is especially beautiful when it is fantastically lit up during special night viewings. It is also known as the head temple of the Blue Acala faith, as it houses the national treasure "Acala Two Child Statue (Blue Acala)." It is usually closed to the public, but many worshippers visit when it is open to the public.

Every year in spring and autumn, special night viewing and illuminations are held.

In addition, Shogunzuka Seiryuden is located on a hill about a 10-minute drive from Shoren-in Temple. This is the place where Emperor Kanmu is said to have prayed for the protection of the country when the capital was moved to Heian-kyo, and there is a large observation deck that offers a 360-degree view of the Kyoto cityscape. During the day, you can see famous sites such as Kyoto Tower, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and Toji Temple, and at night, the night view of Kyoto city, which looks like it is studded with jewels, spreads out below you, and the beauty is exceptional. (※The Shogunzuka circular bus line was discontinued in 2024.)
