The building was designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa and features a simple glass and steel structure. The building is divided into three areas: collection exhibition zone, special exhibition zone, and exchange zone.

The collection exhibition zone displays a wide range of collections, from works by contemporary art masters to works by up-and-coming artists. In the special exhibition zone, special exhibitions introducing contemporary art from Japan and abroad are held. Various cultural activities such as workshops and lectures are held in the Exchange Zone.
