Shuri Castle is a royal castle in Nakayama, the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom, located in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1992.
Shuri Castle was built in the 14th century and functioned as the political, economic, and cultural center of the Ryukyu Kingdom until the early 19th century. From the 14th century to the 19th century, the castle and buildings were repeatedly destroyed or destroyed due to repeated fires and wars, but restoration work began in 1910 and was completed in 1925.
Shuri Castle is built in the Gusuku style, an architectural style unique to the Ryukyus. It is characterized by its curved stone walls and vermilion-colored buildings.
A fire that occurred on October 31, 2019 destroyed major buildings such as the Seiden and Shurei Gate, but restoration work is currently underway.
