Shomyo Falls is the largest waterfall in Japan, with a drop of 350m. It has been selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan. It is a must-see scenic spot where you can enjoy the powerful spray of the water and the majestic nature of Mt. Tateyama.
Shomyo Falls is the largest waterfall in Japan, located in Tateyama Town, Nakaniikawa District, Toyama Prefecture, boasting a drop of 350 meters. It has also been selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan, and its overwhelming scale and roaring sound attract visitors. In particular, from spring to early summer, when the amount of meltwater increases, the even larger "Hannoki Falls" appear to the right of Shomyo Falls, making the two waterfalls even more impressive as "phantom waterfalls". This is a place where you can experience the art of nature woven by the abundant water of the Tateyama mountain range up close.

The greatest attraction of this waterfall is its impressive scenery and its changing appearance with the seasons. From the observation deck, you can feel the spray rising from the basin and the force of the water roaring down. In the season of fresh green leaves, it is surrounded by vivid green, and in autumn, the surrounding trees turn red, creating a beautiful contrast with the waterfall that is like a painting. In winter, the falls are closed due to snow accumulation, but during that time the falls freeze over and transform into a gigantic frozen waterfall.

Shomyo Falls is not just a place to view the falls; you can also experience the rich nature of Mt. Tateyama by walking along the surrounding trails. If you walk along the well-maintained promenade up to the base of the falls, you'll be bathed in negative ions and refreshed both body and mind.

The road becomes a pedestrian-only road partway through, so it's about a 30-minute walk from the parking lot.

The road is closed in winter due to snow accumulation. It is usually open from late April to late November.
