Misasa Onsen, located in central Tottori Prefecture, is known as a radioactive spring with one of the world's highest radon contents, and legend has it that if you bathe in it, your illness will be cured before the third morning comes, making it a truly miraculous hot spring. On the banks of the Misasa River that runs through the center of the hot spring town, there is an open-air bath called the "Riverside Open-Air Bath," which is free to enter, where you can casually experience the famous hot spring in an open space. A stroll around the hot spring town with its retro atmosphere is also an appealing experience, making it the perfect place to soothe the fatigue of your travels.
The symbolic Kawara Open-Air Bath of Misasa Onsen is located at the foot of the Misasa Bridge. It is a very open-air mixed bathing open-air bath where you can bathe while listening to the babbling of the Misasa River. There is a changing room, but there is basically no blindfold, so it may take courage for those who don't like open spaces. However, the charm of this open-air bath is its location and the luxury of the hot spring water. The water is hot, but the feeling of bathing while feeling the breeze of the river is exceptional, and it is used daily by locals. There are only minimal night lights around the bath, so you can enjoy the darkness at night while bathing (the open-air bath itself is not lit up). Please note that there are times on odd-numbered days when bathing is not possible in the morning due to cleaning.
The hot spring town retains the atmosphere of a good old Japanese hot spring resort. With its stone-paved alleys and old wooden inns lined up, just strolling around is soothing. There are old-fashioned playgrounds such as shooting ranges and smart balls, as well as atmospheric public baths (paid), so you can fully enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere. I highly recommend walking around the hot spring town wearing a yukata and walking to the sound of geta sandals. For hot spring aficionados, visiting the public baths, which are different from those in ryokans, is also an irresistible attraction.
It is said that the waters of Misasa Onsen have a "hormesis effect" that activates cells and boosts immunity. There are also several drinking fountains, so you can take in the benefits of the hot springs from the inside. In addition, the hot spring town is equipped with facilities where you can inhale radon mist and foot baths, so you can enjoy the benefits of the hot springs in various ways. Personally, I think that this free open-air riverside bath is not enjoyable for everyone because of its sense of openness, but I think that this experience is the most direct way to feel the hot spring culture of Misasa Onsen. Why not try this special hot spring experience along with a stroll around the historic hot spring town?
[Trivia]
- The waters of Misasa Onsen have one of the highest radon contents in the world, and it is said that inhaling the water can have a "hormesis effect" that activates cells.
- The "Riverside Open-Air Baths" are generally mixed-gender baths, and are located in open areas, so bathing requires some courage (swimsuits are not allowed). Some women seem to be creative in bathing, such as wearing something over their heads, but it seems difficult for most people.
- There are also free foot baths and drinking fountains scattered around the hot spring town, so you can easily enjoy the benefits of the hot springs.
