When visiting Isonokami Shrine, the first thing that catches your eye are the many chickens roaming freely within the grounds. Believed to be messengers of the gods, the chickens roam freely within the grounds, adding a touch of warmth and intimidation to the shrine's tranquil atmosphere. The worship hall, also designated a National Treasure, was built during the Kamakura period and features robust wooden framework. Behind the worship hall, the shrine of Izumo Takeo-no-Kami, which worships the restricted area, is another highlight.
[Trivia]
A shrine's forbidden area is a particularly sacred place within the shrine where general access is restricted. These places are considered to have special meaning due to legends or historical background and are treated with reverence. The forbidden area at Isonokami Shrine is a specific area behind the worship hall and is considered the most sacred place within the sacred grounds.
