Rurikoji Temple is located in Kayama-cho, Yamaguchi City, and is a historic temple that has watched over the rise and fall of the Ouchi clan. The five-story pagoda that stands in the center of the temple grounds was built around 1442 and is the 10th oldest existing five-story pagoda in Japan, and is designated as a national treasure. Its cypress bark roof and graceful appearance convey the architectural style of the mid-Muromachi period, and are captivating to behold. In particular, the "upside-down five-story pagoda" reflected in the pond is said to be a symbol of Yamaguchi, the "western capital," due to its beauty.

The five-story pagoda is lit up at night, creating a fantastical appearance that is different from the daytime. The light of the tower reflected on the water surface is breathtakingly beautiful, and creates a mysterious atmosphere that is different from the daytime. The area around the five-story pagoda has been developed as "Kayama Park," where you can stroll through the beautiful gardens where seasonal flowers bloom. It is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, and is crowded with many tourists. The park is dotted with historical sights, such as the monument to the "Letter of Instruction to Three Sons," which is said to have been sent by Mori Motonari to Kikkawa Motoharu and Kobayakawa Takakage.
