Historical buildings such as the remains of the domain school Yorokan and the Tako Karo Gate are dotted along the street, and you can follow in the footsteps of great people born in Tsuwano, such as Mori Ogai and Nishi Amane.
Souvenir shops, cafes, and restaurants are dotted along the street, so you can enjoy the unique flavors and crafts of Tsuwano while strolling. There are plenty of spots worth stopping by, such as a shop where you can experience hand-baking Genjimaki and a shop that serves Tsuwano-yaki ice cream. At night, the ginkgo trees along Tonomachi Street are lit up, and events are held that create a fantastic atmosphere.
Many Tsuwano specialty confections, Genjimaki, are sold around the street.
On weekends and holidays, a steam locomotive departs from Tsuwano Station for Yamaguchi Station around dusk, so it is recommended for those who are interested.
[Trivia]
The carp in the canal that flows through Tonomachi Street was once used for daily life, but is now a symbol of Tsuwano. Carp farming has been popular since the feudal era, and it is said to have a long history. In addition, the Japanese irises that decorate the canal in early summer are carefully cultivated by local residents.
[Hidden gem]
The Tsuwano Catholic Church on Tonomachi Street is a beautiful Western Gothic-style building built in 1931. It is famous for its stained glass, and you can spend time quietly in a solemn atmosphere. Additionally, at the Anno Mitsumasa Museum on one corner of Tonomachi Street, picture books, landscape paintings and other artworks by Tsuwano-born artist Anno Mitsumasa are on display, allowing you to get a deeper feel for the atmosphere of Tonomachi Street.
Municipal parking lot next to Tsuwano Station: 500 yen/day.
