Mount Horaiji can be accessed by climbing the main approach with 1,425 stone steps, or by driving to the top of the mountain using the Horaijiyama Parkway. If you are confident in your physical strength, you can feel the breath of nature and the weight of history while climbing the stone steps. Near the summit, there is also the "Hōraisan Toshogu Shrine", which is associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu, and by visiting both, you can get a deeper insight into history.
During the autumn foliage season, the entire mountain is dyed red and yellow, and it becomes crowded with many tourists.
The Hōraijiyama Parkway is currently free, but there is a fee for parking.
There are also many hidden tourist spots nearby, such as Yuya Onsen and Atera no Nanataki, one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan.
[Useful points of concern]
The 1,425 stone steps of the main approach may be too much for those who are not confident in their physical strength. There is a route that takes you close to the summit by car, but it is a mountain road, so driving caution is required. During the autumn foliage season (November) and the New Year's visit period, it is very crowded, the parking lot may be full, and the temple grounds may become lively.
Free for the temple grounds (separate fee for Horaijiyama Natural Science Museum, separate fee for event participation)
[Opening hours]
Free entry
[Closed days]
Open all year round
[Parking fee]
Horaijiyama Parkway Parking: Paid (550 yen for regular cars, 1,100 yen during peak season)
