[Hiroshima] A classic itinerary from the Atomic Bomb Dome to Miyajima Itsukushima Shrine

Pack Hiroshima’s must-sees into one day: the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Museum, Miyajima’s Itsukushima Shrine, Hiroshima Castle, and great local food. Get around efficiently using the city streetcar and JR trains.

From Hiroshima Station, take the streetcar to Peace Memorial Park. Start early at the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum to ground your day in history. Walk along the Motoyasu River, stopping by the cenotaph and the Rest House to connect the park’s memorial sites.

Next, make a quick visit to Hiroshima Castle (main keep and Ninomaru). Then ride the streetcar or JR to Miyajimaguchi and catch the ferry to Miyajima. See the “floating” Great Torii gate and the corridors of Itsukushima Shrine, snack your way down Omotesando shopping street (momiji manju cakes, oysters, conger eel), and—time permitting—ride the Mt. Misen ropeway for sweeping Seto Inland Sea views. Watch the torii at sunset, then head back to downtown Hiroshima and finish with classic Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.
