This complex cultural facility in Masuda City features beautiful Sekishu roofing tiles and consists of the Shimane Prefectural Iwami Art Museum and the Shimane Prefectural Iwami Arts Theatre.
Shimane Prefectural Arts and Culture Center "Grand Toi" is a multi-purpose cultural facility that combines an art museum and a theater. Its greatest feature is that the exterior walls are made of approximately 280,000 Sekishu tiles from the local Masuda City. The heavy and beautiful exterior, woven with deep reddish-brown tiles, stands out against the blue sky and sunsets, making it a true landmark. "Grand Toi" means "big roof" in French, and expresses the concept of a facility that embraces culture and the arts.
The exterior, built using 280,000 Sekishu tiles, is also highly praised.
The art museum has a permanent exhibition of works by painters from Shimane Prefecture, as well as special exhibitions of various genres from Japan and abroad. By experiencing the works of artists with local ties, you can deepen your understanding of Shimane's culture and history. Meanwhile, the theater (Iwami Arts Theater) hosts a wide range of performances throughout the year, including classical concerts, plays, traditional performing arts, and local events, contributing to the promotion of local culture.
[Trivia]
Grand Toi was designed by world-renowned architect Hiroshi Naito. The bold idea of using Sekishu tiles on the exterior walls reflects the designer's respect for the local area and his philosophy of building architecture that is rooted in the local climate.
