Chion-in Temple is the head temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, and is known as a central presence in Japanese Buddhist culture and history.
This temple was founded by Honen Shonin. Known as the founder of the Pure Land sect, Honen Shonin believed in reincarnation in the Pure Land and spread the teaching of the Nembutsu. Chion-in Temple was built as a place to convey the teachings of Honen Shonin, and many believers and tourists visit to remember his virtues.


The architecture of Chion-in has the beauty of traditional Japanese Buddhist architecture, and the five-storied pagoda is the highlight. Along with the atmosphere of each season, you can feel the teachings of Honen Shonin and the history of Japan. There is also a statue of Honen Shonin in the precincts, which reminds us of his great achievements.
