Jigokudani Onsen is famous for Japanese macaque monkeys relaxing in the hot springs.
Jigokudani is a valley at an altitude of 850 meters, and has a harsh environment that is covered in snow for almost one-third of the year. However, this land is a paradise for monkeys. A group of Japanese macaques has lived here in its natural state since ancient times.

Jigokudani Monkey Park is known as the only place in the world where you can observe monkeys bathing in hot springs in winter. In the winter, the monkeys soak in hot springs to warm up in Jigokudani, where the average temperature is below freezing. The sight of monkeys soaking in the hot springs attracts many tourists.

Jigokudani Monkey Park is currently home to approximately 150 Japanese macaques. The monkeys are accustomed to humans and can be observed at close range. Surrounded by a group of monkeys, you can observe the ecology of wild Japanese macaques up close.
