Mt. Hakodate is 334m above sea level, and you can see the city of Hakodate from the top of the mountain. It is one of the three major night views in Japan and a standard date spot in Hakodate.
Mt. Hakodate was built as a fortress during the Meiji period, and a gun battery was installed at the top of the mountain. It was opened to the public in 1953, and now you can access the top of the mountain by ropeway.
Hakodateyama Observation Deck is a three-story building, and from the rooftop observation deck on the top floor, you can get a panoramic view of the Hakodate city area sandwiched between Hakodate Bay and the Tsugaru Strait. It is said that on a clear day, you can see all the way to Aomori's Shimokita Peninsula.
You can climb Mt. Hakodate on foot in about an hour.
There is a free parking lot for climbers in front of the Mt. Hakodate Management Office.
