Nikkosan Rinnoji Temple is a monzeki temple of the Tendai sect founded in the Nara period, located to the south of Nikko Toshogu Shrine.
Many historical buildings and cultural assets are preserved within the grounds of Rinnoji Temple, including the Sanbutsu-do Hall, Taiyu-in Temple, and Treasure Hall. The Sanbutsudo is the largest wooden structure on Mt. Nikko and enshrines the Senju Kannon, Amida Nyorai, and Bato Kannon, the main Buddhas of Nikko Sanzan. Taiyu-in is a mausoleum dedicated to the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The Treasure Hall houses many valuable cultural assets that tell the history of Rinnoji Temple.

Rinnoji Temple was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1999 as a "Shrine and Temple of Nikko." Nikko's shrines and temples are Japan's largest Buddhist architectural complex, consisting of three shrines and one temple: Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine, and Rinnoji Temple. Rinnoji Temple occupies an important position among the World Heritage Sites due to its historical and cultural value.
The main hall (Sanbutsu-do) is undergoing major Heisei repairs until 2020, but there is an observatory walkway (sky corridor) where you can see Buddha statues.

There are many items of high historical value, and the Taiyu-in Mausoleum's main hall, Ai-no-ma, and worship hall have been designated as national treasures.
