It is a valley in Nikko National Park in the upper reaches of Kinugawa Onsen.
The roughly 3km stretch between Kinugawa Onsen and Kawaji Onsen is dotted with strangely shaped rocks and stones, and the scenery resembles a writhing dragon, hence the name Ryuokyo.

The attraction of Ryuokyo is the beauty of its natural formations. Volcanic rocks eroded by the flow of the Kinugawa River form strangely shaped rocks. Both banks of the valley are lined with lush green forests, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature throughout the four seasons.

Autumn is also a famous place for autumn leaves.

There is a hiking course along the Kinugawa River from Ryuokyo Station to Kawaji Onsen Station.
