Proceeding through the park, you will reach the Cenotaph for the Victims of the Atomic Bomb (Hiroshima Peace Monument). An inscription is engraved on the monument, saying, "Rest in peace, for we will not repeat this mistake," and a list of the victims is kept in a stone chamber behind it. Beyond that is the Flame of Peace, which is lit with the hope that it will continue to burn until the day when nuclear weapons are no longer on earth. These monuments can be said to be living teaching materials for learning from the tragedies of the past and building peace in the future.
The entire park continues to send out messages of peace, and various people, from school trip students to foreign tourists, quietly offer prayers here. Every year on August 6th, the Peace Memorial Ceremony is held, where many people from all over the world renew their pledge for peace. This is a place that cannot be dismissed as simply a tourist spot; it is one that all human beings should visit and face at least once.
[Trivia]
- The design of the park was based on a master plan by architect Kenzo Tange, just like the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
- The Flame of Peace was lit in 1964 and has never been extinguished since, symbolizing the determination to abolish nuclear weapons.
