This castle was built in the early Edo period by the Matsuura clan, lords of Hirado Domain.
Overlooking Hirado Port and overlooking the Kyushu mainland on the opposite shore, it stands on a hill jutting out into the Hirado Strait. It is surrounded by sea on three sides and a natural moat.
It is a terraced hilltop castle with the Honmaru (main castle) built at the top of the hill, the Ninomaru (second bailey) to the south, and the Sannomaru (third bailey) to the east.

As the castle was abandoned under the Meiji era's Castle Abolition Order, the castle tower is a replica made of reinforced concrete. The observation deck on the top floor offers a spectacular view of the Hirado Strait, the Hirado Bridge, and even Iki and Tsushima in the distance. Enjoy the changing scenery throughout the seasons, from the beautiful cherry blossoms in spring to the colorful autumn leaves in autumn.
