Legend has it that the palace built by Susanoo-no-Mikoto after exterminating Yamata Orochi became a shrine.
After Susano-o-no-mikoto exterminated the eight-headed serpent, he married Princess Inada, built Suganomiya, and settled down here. This Suganomiya is considered to be the oldest palace in Japan and is called "Japan's first palace".

At Suga Shrine, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, Inada-hime, and her child god Yashimano-no-Mikoto are enshrined as the main enshrined deities. In addition, the spirits of Susanoo-no-mikoto, Kushiinada-hime-no-mikoto, and their child god Yashimano-no-mikoto are enshrined in the Okumiya.

Suga Shrine is a sacred place of Izumo mythology, and is a shrine representing Shimane Prefecture, where many people visit as the site of the oldest palace in Japan.

There is a couple rocks in Okumiya.
