Toji Temple is located southwest of Kyoto Station. In 823 AD, Kobo Daishi made it the main training hall for Shingon Esoteric Buddhism.
Many of the buildings were rebuilt in the Edo period.
The five-storied pagoda, which can be seen from the Shinkansen, is 55 meters high, making it the tallest wooden structure in Japan.

It is also registered as a World Heritage Site as "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto".
