Just below the main hall is Otowa Falls, where a sacred water flows that is said to bring three benefits: longevity, success in love, and academic success. Worshippers can scoop up this water with a ladle and drink it, which is also the origin of the name Kiyomizu-dera. Many buildings designated as national treasures and important cultural properties, such as the Niomon Gate, the three-story pagoda, and the Kaisan-do Hall, are scattered throughout the temple grounds, giving a sense of the weight of history.
[Trivia]
The stage of Kiyomizu is about 13 meters high, and the proverb "jumping off the stage of Kiyomizu" means making a bold decision. It is said that people used to actually jump off the stage, but it is now prohibited. In addition, behind the main hall is Jishu Shrine, which enshrines the god of matchmaking, but as of 2025, it is closed for the time being due to maintenance work on the grounds.
[Hidden spot]
Further ahead from the main hall to the inner sanctuary is Koyasu Tower. It is said to bring good luck in safe childbirth, and is located overlooking the stage of Kiyomizu. Since there are relatively few tourists, you can take your time to enjoy the view.
Kiyomizu-dera Temple also offers nighttime worship for certain periods in spring, summer, and autumn. It is recommended because you can see a beautiful view that is different from the daytime.
If you walk towards Yasaka Shrine, you can enjoy the Kyoto atmosphere of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka with stone steps and cobblestones.
There are many temples and shops in the surrounding area, so it's a good idea to take a leisurely stroll.
