The Otorii of Heian Jingu Shrine is known for its bright red color, and this torii at the entrance of the approach to the shrine is a popular photo spot for many tourists. The main hall and cloisters imitate the palace architecture of the Heian period, recreating the elegant atmosphere of that time. Especially during the cherry blossom season, it becomes a superb view together with the beautiful garden in the precincts, and it is crowded with many people.
Various festivals and events are held at Heian Jingu throughout the year, but the Jidai Matsuri is especially famous. This festival, in which people dressed as Heian period aristocrats, samurai, and maiko parade through the streets of Kyoto, is a very valuable event where you can feel the history and culture of Japan.
