This uninhabited island in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is known for the "Duel on Ganryu Island" between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro. Although it is an island with nothing around, it is a must-see for Miyamoto Musashi fans.
Ganryujima is an uninhabited island that has been etched in history as the place where the swordsmen Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro fought a legendary duel in 1612. Its official name is Funashima, but since Kojiro adopted the name "Ganryu", it became widely known as Ganryujima. Statues of Musashi and Kojiro have been erected on the island, and the suffocating atmosphere of the time seems to come back to life when you step onto Ganryujima, the site of the duel.

Almost everything on the island is just the statues of Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro, but there are well-maintained walking paths on the island, where you can take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the coast where the duel took place and the surrounding nature.

To get there, there are direct flights available daily from Shimonoseki's Karato Pier and Kitakyushu's Mojiko Port. It's only a short 10-minute trip one way.
