Higashi Chaya District is an important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. This Edo-period teahouse district is a place where the traditions of Hokuriku Kanazawa remain strong, and you can enjoy a photogenic stroll through the gold leaf culture and kimono rentals.
It has flourished as a teahouse district since the Edo period, and is now lined with shops and cafes selling Japanese sweets, traditional crafts, and miscellaneous goods, making it a popular spot to enjoy the atmosphere of Kanazawa.
The walking route is about 500m centered on the main stone-paved street. The eaves are lined with gold leaf signs and lattice windows, creating an atmospheric landscape. There is also night lighting, so you can enjoy the different beauty by day and night.
Renovated teahouse buildings are dotted with cafes, gold leaf soft serve ice cream, and Japanese sweets shops. We recommend renting a kimono and enjoying the atmosphere of the ancient capital, while choosing souvenirs that are typical of Kanazawa and experiencing matcha tea. Photography enthusiasts will love the photo spots where the light and shadows shine through the lattices.
On the banks of the Asano River, there are old streets with latticed windows called Kimusuko (wooden insect cages).
