Hokkaido's Mount Iou is an active volcano that emits white smoke. It's a place where you can feel the breath of the earth as you experience the dynamic scenery and the smell of sulfur.
Mount Iwo, located in Akan Mashu National Park in eastern Hokkaido, is an active volcano called "Atosanupuri (naked mountain)" in the Ainu language. The sight of white smoke constantly spewing from the mountainside and the unique smell of sulfur in the air is a powerful sight that allows you to feel the energy of the earth up close. A promenade is built right up to the fumarole, and the dynamic scenery overwhelms visitors. This is a recommended spot for tourists who want to experience the majestic nature of Hokkaido and the heartbeat of the earth.

At the foot of Mount Iwo, there is a facility called "Mount Iwo MOKMOK Base", which has a museum where you can learn about the nature and history of Mount Iwo, as well as the MOKMOK Marche & Cafe where you can enjoy local souvenirs and light meals. The specialty hot spring eggs are made using the geothermal heat of Mount Iwo and are popular for their unique flavor. The surrounding area is filled with colonies of Ezoisotsutsuji, which only grow in soil acidified by volcanic activity. From June to July, the pretty white flowers bloom, adding color to the desolate landscape.

It is easily accessible from Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo, so it is recommended to visit it in addition to sightseeing in the surrounding area. In particular, there is a walking trail called the Tsutsujigahara Nature Trail from Kawayu Onsen, where you can walk to Mt. Iou while enjoying the Ezoisotsutsuji colonies. It will be a memorable place where you can feel the beauty of nature and the strength of life.

[Trivia]
Mt. Iou was once a place where sulfur mining was actively carried out. Remnants of this can still be seen today. Also, since there are few lights around at night, it is known as a hidden spot for stargazing.

[Hidden gem information]
Behind Mt. Iou's MOKMOK Base lies the Aoba Tunnel, the remains of a railway line that was once used to transport sulfur, which has been developed into a walking path that stretches straight through the forest. You can enjoy a nature walk while feeling the history. Also, from the Mashu Third Observatory, it is a hidden scenic spot where you can get a panoramic view of Mt. Iou, Lake Mashu, and Lake Kussharo.
