Many national treasures and important cultural properties are on display, and it is a place that satisfies your intellectual curiosity as you can learn more about history and art through Japanese cultural properties.
Tokyo National Museum is located in Ueno Park in Taito Ward, Tokyo, and is the oldest and largest museum in Japan. Founded in 1872, it has been collecting, storing, and exhibiting a wide range of cultural assets, mainly Japanese art, archaeology, and Oriental art. Its collection of over 120,000 items includes 89 national treasures and 653 important cultural properties (as of April 2025), and you can see many of Japan's greatest treasures up close. It consists of multiple buildings, including the Main Building, the Oriental Gallery, and the Horyuji Treasure Gallery, each with its own unique theme.

In the Main Building, Japanese art and crafts from the Jomon period to the Edo period are displayed by era, allowing you to get a bird's-eye view of the flow of Japanese history. There are precious items that you may have seen in textbooks, such as swords, armor, ukiyo-e, and ceramics, and you will be captivated by their beauty and intricacy. The Oriental Gallery displays art and archaeological artifacts from various parts of Asia, including China, the Korean Peninsula, India, and Egypt, allowing visitors to learn about the history of cultural exchange between the East and the West. Each exhibition room is spacious, allowing visitors to take their time to appreciate the exhibits.

The museum grounds themselves are of historical value, and visitors can also enjoy beautiful gardens and teahouses. In particular, the main building is a masterpiece of Western-style architecture built in the Meiji period, and is a must-see in itself. Special exhibitions and special exhibitions are also held frequently, providing opportunities for in-depth learning with different themes each time.
