The Great Buddha of Kamakura is said to have been built in the mid-13th century and was originally housed inside a temple, but the temple was washed away by a tsunami during the Muromachi period, and it is now located outdoors. It has endured wind and snow and has been preserved in its current form for approximately 750 years.
It is also possible to enter the womb of the Great Buddha and experience its size from inside. It is a place where you can spend a peaceful time in the quiet and solemn grounds, feeling the weight of history and the grandeur of the Great Buddha.
Admission fee (precincts): 300 yen for adults and junior and senior high school students, 150 yen for elementary school students
Fee to view inside the Great Buddha: 50 yen (additional fee required)
[Opening hours]
April-September: 8:00-17:30
October-March: 8:00-17:00
*Entry is until 15 minutes before closing. Viewing inside the Great Buddha is from 8:00-16:30 (all year round)
[Closed days]
Open all year round
[Parking]
There is no dedicated parking lot.
*Please use the nearby paid parking lots or paid parking lots. It gets very crowded especially during the tourist season, so we recommend using public transportation (about a 7-minute walk from Enoshima Electric Railway's Hase Station).
