Founded in the Kamakura period, this is Japan's first Zen Buddhist training center. It is an ancient temple ranked first among the Kamakura Five Mountains, and boasts national treasure architecture and a beautiful garden.
Kenchoji Temple is the head temple of the Kenchoji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, founded in 1253 by Hojo Tokiyori, the fifth regent of the Kamakura Shogunate. It is known as the first temple in Japan where pure Zen teachings were preached, and is ranked first among the Five Mountains of Kamakura. The vast grounds retain the original layout of the temple buildings built by Rankei Doryu, who was invited from China, and there are many sights to see, including the temple bell, a national treasure, and the Sanmon Gate, Buddha Hall, and Lecture Hall, which are Important Cultural Properties.

The grounds, which have a solemn atmosphere unique to Zen temples, are surrounded by deep greenery, and just walking along the approach to the temple seems to cleanse the soul. In particular, the painting of a cloud dragon on the ceiling of the Lecture Hall is impressive and worth seeing. In addition, if you climb the long stone steps leading to the "Hansobo" behind the Hojo, you will find a lush natural forest, and from the observation deck you can see a panoramic view of the cityscape of Kamakura and Sagami Bay.

Zen meditation sessions and sutra copying sessions are held regularly, providing a valuable experience that brings you into contact with the spirit of Zen.
