The sacred place where Tokugawa Ieyasu rests. This World Heritage site is attractive for its gorgeous architecture and magnificent views of Suruga Bay.
Kunozan Toshogu Shrine is the place where Tokugawa Ieyasu was buried after his death, and is a historic shrine that became the model for the many Toshogu shrines across the country. The shrine buildings were built by the orders of Hidetada, the second shogun of the Edo shogunate, by the best craftsmen of the time, and the gorgeous architectural style of Gongen-zukuri, with its jet black and gold leaf, is overwhelming to behold. The shrine buildings, designated as national treasures, are intricately carved down to the smallest detail, and you can feel the traditional beauty and technology of Japan at its finest.

Mount Kunozan is located on a small hill facing Suruga Bay, and its location is like a fortress. It is also a scenic spot where you can see the beautiful coastline and the vast Suruga Bay. On a clear day, you can see the Izu Peninsula and the Southern Alps in the distance, and the majestic view seems to tell the reason why Ieyasu chose this place.

It is common to access the shrine by taking the Nihon-daira Ropeway, and you can also enjoy the view from the air. You can also climb the 1,159 stone steps from the sea side (about a 20-minute walk), which is a way of paying respects to Ieyasu. Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, which combines history, architecture, spectacular views, and its appeal as a power spot, is a highlight of Shizuoka tourism.

If you climb the stairs from the sea side, you will need to use a private parking lot (paid).
There is a free parking lot (200 cars) at Nihondaira Station.
