Kegon Falls is a 97m waterfall located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. The water from Lake Chuzenji flows down the lava wall of Mount Nantai, and the powerful spray of the water makes it one of the three most famous waterfalls in Japan.
The most distinctive feature of Kegon Falls is its majestic scale. The diameter of the waterfall basin is about Kegon Falls, located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, is one of Japan's representative waterfalls, and is counted among the "Three Great Waterfalls of Japan" along with Nachi Falls in Wakayama Prefecture and Fukuroda Falls in Ibaraki Prefecture. The sight of the Daiya River flowing out of Lake Chuzenji and cascading down a 97-meter-high rock wall is truly spectacular. The dynamic sound of the water and the spray of the water that rises up around allow visitors to feel the majesty of nature. In particular, from the observation deck near the waterfall basin, you can experience the power of the waterfall up close, and you will be overwhelmed by its beauty and strength.

Kegon Falls shows different beautiful expressions in each season. In spring, the Yashio Azaleas that bloom in Kegon Valley paint the mountainside pink, and the season changes to dazzling new greenery. In summer, the water volume increases and the waterfall surrounded by deep greenery becomes even more impressive. In autumn, the surrounding mountains are vividly colored with autumn leaves, creating a breathtakingly beautiful landscape that contrasts with the waterfall. In winter, the severe cold freezes the entire waterfall, allowing you to enjoy the sparkle of the frozen waterfall, which looks like a giant chandelier.

The observation deck can be reached in about one minute by using a dedicated elevator (fee required), so anyone can easily enjoy the spectacular view. It is easily accessible from other tourist spots such as Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and many tourists visit this popular Nikko tourist spot.

[Trivia]
Kegon Falls is said to have been discovered by Shodo Shonin, who founded Nikko about 1,200 years ago. There is a theory that the name "Kegon" comes from the name of a nearby temple called Kegon-ji Temple or from the Buddhist scripture "Kegon Sutra."

[Hidden gem]
The standard view is from the observation deck that uses the Kegon Falls elevator, but there is also a free observation deck that allows you to see the top of the falls from a little higher up. This is located a little way down the road to the right of the elevator platform, and is recommended for those who want to see the falls from a different angle. Also, just downstream of Kegon Falls is the hidden famous waterfall "Nirvana Falls," where you can enjoy a different view from Kegon Falls.

[Useful points of concern]
During the autumn foliage season and holidays such as Golden Week, the Kegon Falls elevator can be very crowded and there may be waiting times. We recommend that you visit with plenty of time, or aim for weekdays or early mornings when it is relatively quiet.
