The highest point on the road across the Shiretoko Peninsula. A spectacular spot with a panoramic view of Mt. Rausu, the Nemuro Strait, and Kunashiri Island.
Shiretoko Pass Observatory is located at the highest point of National Route 334, commonly known as the Shiretoko Cross-Island Road, which connects Shari Town and Rausu Town in Hokkaido. From the pass, which is 738 meters above sea level, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Mt. Rausu, the highest peak of the Shiretoko mountain range, directly in front of you, a deep green virgin forest of Japanese stone pine spreads out below you, and even further away, you can see the Nemuro Strait and Kunashiri Island of the Northern Territories floating beyond it. It is counted as one of the eight scenic spots of Shiretoko, and is a place where you can feel the majestic nature of Shiretoko National Park.

This Shiretoko Cross-Island Road has been selected as one of the 100 most famous roads in Japan, and is a popular route for driving and touring. Shiretoko Pass Observatory is also an ideal rest spot for driving, and is equipped with free parking and toilets. From the observation deck, if the weather is good, you can enjoy the powerful figure of Mt. Rausu, the sunset over the Sea of Okhotsk, and at night, a star-filled sky. The sunrise over the Pacific Ocean is particularly spectacular, so visiting early in the morning is recommended.
