Cape Kamui is a cape that juts out into the Sea of Japan on the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido. The spectacular views of the cobalt blue ocean and the majestic cliffs are a highlight.
Cape Kamui Observatory is a beautiful cape located in Shakotan Town, Hokkaido, jutting out from the northwestern tip of the Shakotan Peninsula. Its greatest feature is the superb view of the crystal clear cobalt blue ocean, known as Shakotan Blue, spreading out below you. A 770m promenade called Charenka no Komichi leads to the tip of the cape, where you can experience up close the crystal clear ocean color that you would never expect to find on the Sea of Japan side, and the majestic natural beauty created by the rugged cliffs. The promenade has ups and downs, and the view from the high point is refreshing, with a 360-degree panoramic view.

At the tip of the cape stands Cape Kamui Lighthouse, which was lit in 1888. The contrast between its chalk white form and the blue ocean is very beautiful, making it a popular photo spot. The promenade was once a place where women were not allowed to enter, and its mysterious atmosphere is one of its attractions.

Also, beyond that, a huge rock called Kamui Rock stands tall.
Kamuiwa is a huge rock about 30m high and 100m in circumference, jutting out from the cliff coastline. Kamuiwa has maintained its shape for hundreds of years, resistant to the rough waves of the Sea of Japan.

There are promenades on both sides of the cliffs leading to the observation deck, which are thrilling and pleasant. It takes about 20 minutes to walk 1.2m from the parking lot to the lighthouse.

[Useful points of concern]
The Charenka trail has ups and downs and there are differences in elevation, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Especially on windy days, be careful not to blow away your hat or other items. Depending on the weather, fog is likely to occur, and even if you visit, you may not be able to see the view.
