This historic shrine in Kirishima City is said to have begun when a main building was constructed in the 6th century. The vermilion-painted main building and the majestic forest are beautiful and it is famous as a powerful power spot.
Kirishima Shrine enshrines Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Amaterasu Omikami, who appears in Japanese mythology, as its main deity. Ninigi-no-Mikoto is said to have descended to earth at the command of Amaterasu Omikami and created the country of Japan.

Kirishima Shrine is a shrine located in the forest, characterized by its vermilion-painted pillars and traditional architecture. The current shrine building was relocated and rebuilt in 1715 by the Shimazu clan to avoid the eruption of Mount Takachiho.

The shrine grounds also contain spots related to mythology, such as the "Amanoiwato" that appears in the legend of the Ama-no-Iwato, and the "Amanofukugawa" where Ninigi-no-Mikoto descended.

The grounds are surrounded by a lush cedar forest, and the vivid vermilion-painted shrine building and the majestic nature of the Kirishima mountain range that spreads out beyond it harmonize in harmony, creating a solemn and mysterious atmosphere.

Kirishima Shrine has long been known as a sacred place for Shugendo, and has maintained its history and faith despite repeated eruptions and relocations of the Kirishima mountain range. The site is located near Takachiho-no-mine, where the myth of the descent of the heavenly grandson (Tenson Korin) is told, and is an important location for the myth. Walking through the grounds, you will be overwhelmed by the power of the large trees full of vitality, such as the sacred tree "Goshinboku no Sugi" (Cedar of the Sacred Tree), which is over 800 years old, and is attracting attention as a powerful power spot.

[Hidden Spot]
At the back of the grounds of Kirishima Shrine is the "Furumiyaato" (Furumiyaato), which has relatively few visitors. It is said that the shrine once stood here, and in the quiet atmosphere, you can feel a more sacred air. Also, if you drive a little further from Kirishima Shrine, you will find "Kirishima Onsenkyo," which is recommended for sightseeing in addition to the hot springs. During the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves, the scenery around the approach to the shrine is beautiful and makes for an enjoyable stroll.
