Located in Kamishihoro, Hokkaido, this concrete arch bridge is built on the former Shihoro Line of the Japanese National Railways. It is known as the "Phantom Bridge" because its appearance changes depending on the season and water level, and its mysterious scenery is an attractive feature.
Taushubetsu Bridge is a concrete arch bridge located in Kamishihoro Town, Kato District, Hokkaido, on the abandoned site of the former JNR Shihoro Line. This bridge, which spans the Taushubetsu River, is known as the "phantom bridge" because its appearance changes depending on the water level of Lake Nukabira. It shows different expressions with each season, submerged in the lake in summer and revealing its entire form when the water level drops, and in winter its beautiful arch is reflected on the frozen lake surface. Its appearance, standing quietly in nature, gives a sense of the aesthetics of ruins and attracts many people.
The charm of this bridge lies in the contrast between the man-made structure that decays over time and the majestic nature. The concrete arch that appears on the lake surface looks like an ancient Roman ruin, and its fantastical scenery attracts many photography enthusiasts, from professional photographers to amateurs. In particular, the early morning fog and the orange sunset create a more mystical atmosphere, overwhelming the viewer.
[Useful points of concern]
It cannot be seen from August to October because it is submerged in water.
It can be seen from January to June. (Depending on the amount of rainfall that year)
There are three ways to see the Taushubetsu River Bridge: "view it from an observation deck along the national highway," "take a paid tour with a local guide," or "drive along the forest road with permission to get to the site."
Due to frequent traffic accidents, the forest road leading to the bridge is closed, so it is common to view it from an observation deck located far away. Paid tours are held that go close to the bridge.
There is a space to park several cars on the side of the road at the entrance to the observation deck.
On April 28, 2024, there was a report of a brown bear sighting about 400m into the forest road leading to the Taushubetsu River Bridge. In addition, the forest road is closed to traffic.
