Ginga Falls and Ryusei Falls are two waterfalls on the cliffs of the Ishikari River, each with a drop of 90 meters and a width of 120 meters, and are selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan. The graceful Ginga Falls and the powerful Ryusei Falls are a popular scenic spot that shows off their contrasting beauty.
Ginga Falls and Ryusei Falls are two contrasting waterfalls located near Sounkyo Onsen in Daisetsuzan National Park in Kamikawa Town, Hokkaido. The waterfalls are characterized by the way they flow down the steep cliffs of Sounkyo, and have been selected as one of Japan's 100 best waterfalls for their beautiful scenery. Ginga Falls, located on the left, is likened to feminine beauty due to its graceful appearance with many thin streams falling like white threads. On the other hand, Ryusei Falls, located on the right, flows powerfully as a single thick waterfall, giving a sense of masculine strength. As the two waterfalls appear side by side, they are also called the "Couple Waterfalls," and many tourists enjoy their contrasting beauty.
About a 20-minute walk away, there is an observation deck called Sobakudai, where you can view the two waterfalls at once, and a magnificent view unfolds after climbing a slightly steep slope. From the observation deck, you can get a full view of not only the waterfall, but also the magnificent view of Sounkyo with its columnar jointed rocks, allowing you to feel the majestic nature of Hokkaido. Another attraction is that it shows completely different faces depending on the season, from the beautiful fresh green of summer, to the fiery red leaves of autumn, and the waterfall frozen over in winter.
