Zojoji Temple, the head temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, is a historic temple located in Shiba Park, Minato Ward, Tokyo, and is known as the family temple of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Its magnificent view, with Tokyo Tower as a backdrop, creates a solemn atmosphere even in the heart of the city, making it a popular photo spot for domestic and international tourists. Zojoji Temple was founded in the Muromachi period, and has played an important role in Japanese history since Tokugawa Ieyasu designated it as his family temple when he established the Edo Shogunate. Various buildings are scattered throughout the vast grounds, giving you a sense of the weight of history.

This temple is visited by many people because it houses the remains of Tokugawa Ieyasu, as well as those of his wife, Kochoin, daughter, Kamehime, and grandson, Iemitsu.

Zojoji Temple is also said to have the power to ward off evil and bring good luck in games, and many people visit it to worship.

The Sangedatsumon Gate (Sanmon) has been designated an Important Cultural Property.

The greatest attraction of Zojoji Temple is its historical background and the contrast with Tokyo Tower, a symbol of modern Tokyo. Sangedatsumon Gate was built in the early Edo period and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. When you pass through this gate, the main hall with Tokyo Tower in the background spreads out before you, creating a unique view that blends tradition and modernity. The temple grounds also contain the Tokugawa Family Graveyard, where you can learn more about Japanese history.

Zojoji Temple is not only a place to worship, but also to enjoy beautiful gardens and seasonal events. In spring, the cherry blossoms bloom in full bloom and the temple is crowded with many cherry blossom viewers. There are also opportunities to experience Japanese culture, such as "copying sutras" held several times a year. It is the perfect place for those who want to forget the hustle and bustle of the city and spend a relaxing time in a quiet and solemn space.
