Located in Annaka City, Gunma Prefecture, this is a relic of a beautiful red brick four-arch bridge made of railway lines. It tells the history of the Abt system railway, and you can enjoy the spectacular views and retro atmosphere on a walk along the abandoned railway line.
Megane Bridge, officially known as the Usui Third Bridge, is a magnificent brick arch bridge located in Annaka City, Gunma Prefecture, built in the Meiji era with a height of 31m and a length of 91m. It was once an important part of the Abt system railway that crossed the steep Usui Pass, and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan for its sturdy construction and beautiful scenery.
Although it is no longer used as a railway, it has been developed as a promenade called Abt Road, and is a popular tourist spot where you can stroll while experiencing the history of the abandoned railway.
The greatest attraction of this bridge is its retro and photogenic scenery. The four-arch brick bridge blends beautifully with the surrounding nature during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves, and shows a painting-like beauty. From the bridge, you can look down on the view of the former railway tracks continuing as a promenade and the deep valley, and feel the weight of history and the grandeur of nature at the same time. The bridge is especially impressive when you look up at it from below, and you'll be amazed by its structural beauty.
Megane Bridge is a place where you can not only look at it, but actually walk on it and experience its history. We also recommend following the Abt Trail and exploring other railway remains, such as the remains of Maruyama Substation and the old Maruyama Station. You can learn about the role that railways played in the modernization of Japan and the advanced civil engineering technology of the time.
