Located in Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture, this shrine has a rare "downward approach" to the shrine. The main hall is an important cultural property and is a power spot for warding off evil and bringing good fortune.
Nukisaki Shrine, the Ichinomiya of Kozuke Province, is an ancient shrine located in Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture, known as the Ichinomiya of Kozuke Province. It was founded in 531 and is said to have a history of about 1,400 years. Its greatest feature is that it is a rare "Kudarimiya" style shrine, where the approach to the shrine slopes downwards after passing through the main gate. The main hall, worship hall, and tower gate are designated as important cultural properties of Japan, and the vivid vermilion color and the beauty of the carvings are overwhelming, attracting worshippers.

The greatest attraction of this shrine is its unique approach to the shrine and the beautiful construction of the shrine building. While most shrines usually have an uphill approach, Nukisaki Shrine has a mysterious feeling as it slopes downwards from the main gate to the main hall. It is said that this "Downhillmiya" style shrine is designed to ensure that the blessings do not decline. The main hall and worship hall were rebuilt in the Edo period, and their gorgeous decorative carvings are highly regarded as the best technology of the time.

The deities enshrined are Futsunushi no Kami and Hime Okami, who are male and female local deities and are said to have the benefit of connecting people in the region and warding off disasters in all directions.

Nukisaki Shrine is said to have various benefits, such as warding off evil, bringing good luck, finding a partner, and ensuring a good harvest, and is visited by many worshippers throughout the year. In particular, the cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves in autumn are beautiful, and the scenery where nature and history blend together is a popular spot among photography enthusiasts. It is also close by, about a 10-minute drive from Tomioka Silk Mill, so we recommend visiting this unique shrine as part of a trip through history and culture.
