This mountain villa in Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture, was built by Torajiro Kawachi as a villa during the Meiji period. It is a relaxing and healing space with a sukiya-style building and a beautiful garden with borrowed scenery.
Garyu Sanso is a famous piece of architecture built in a scenic spot overlooking the clear waters of the Hijikawa River in Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture. It is said to have been built in the Meiji period by a wealthy merchant from Ozu, modeled after Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto, and is made up of three buildings, Garyu-in, Furo-an, and Chito-an, and a garden that harmonizes with the rich nature. Its beautiful appearance is a cultural asset that represents Ozu, the "Little Kyoto of Iyo," and invites visitors into a world of elegance.

The greatest attraction of this mountain villa is the beauty of its Sukiya-style architecture, which is meticulous down to the smallest detail, and its stunning harmony with nature. In particular, from Furo-an, which stands on a cliff, you can see the magnificent view of the Hijikawa River flowing below and the mountains spreading out on the opposite bank. The view, reminiscent of Arashiyama, is truly spectacular. In addition, the buildings, each with their own unique style, such as Garyu-in with its beautiful thatched roof and the teahouse Chito-an, give you a sense of the depth of Japanese architecture.

Garyu Sanso is not just a place to look at, but a place where you can feel the changing of nature with each season. You can enjoy beautiful scenery throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy scenery in winter. The view from the windows and openings of each building is like a carefully designed framed painting.

Nearby is Ozu Castle, and a combined ticket for Garyu Sanso and Ozu Castle costs 800 yen.

Parking is free at the parking lot at Ozu Machi no Eki Asamoya, where the tourist information center is located (6 minutes walk). There is also free parking space on the riverbed of the Hijikawa River.

[Trivia]
Garyu Sanso's three buildings, Garyuin, Furoan, and Bunko, have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
In 2011, it was listed as one star in the Michelin Green Guide Japon.
