Located in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City, Myotokusan Kegonji Temple, commonly known as "Suzumushi Temple," is a rare temple known for its year-round sounds. Upon entering the temple's reception hall, you'll be enveloped in the refreshing, soothing sounds of thousands of bell crickets. These crickets are lovingly raised within the temple grounds, and their beautiful chirps echo even in winter. Their sounds have a soothing effect, calming the soul and helping you forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Another attraction of Suzumushi Temple is the "Happy Jizo," a Jizo statue said to grant happiness. This Jizo statue is the only one in Japan to wear straw sandals, and it's said to walk to you and grant your wishes. When making a request to the Jizo, it's customary to silently recite a wish and receive an amulet. The charms feature pictures of adorable bell crickets, and are believed to grant wishes.
At Suzumushi Temple, the head priest gives "bell cricket sermons." These sermons, which explain Buddhist teachings in an easy-to-understand manner with a touch of humor, are popular with many worshippers.
