The Okunoin Temple of Deshikaji Temple is a temple associated with the 88 Sacred Temples of Shikoku in Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, and is known as the place where Kobo Daishi (Kukai) practiced asceticism. It is a sacred place at the end of a steep mountain path, and is worshipped as a holy place of asceticism.
Located in the mountains at an altitude of approximately 400 meters, this is the place where Kobo Daishi (Kukai) practiced asceticism at the age of seven, and legend has it that he threw himself off a cliff while chanting, "Save me." It is said that Shaka Nyorai appeared and saved the monk at that moment. In honor of this legend, this place is also known as "Sutemi-ga-take" (Steshin-ga-take).
While it takes about 30 minutes to climb the steep mountain path, the view from the summit is spectacular, with the cityscape of Zentsuji spreading out below.

The inner sanctuary is home to stone Buddha statues and small shrines, where worshippers can be seen quietly praying. As a training site associated with Kobo Daishi, this spot is popular not only with pilgrims and monks, but also with ordinary hikers and tourists.

If you hike to Mount Gahaishi (481 meters above sea level) at the summit, you can also enjoy views of the Sanuki Plain. Depending on your stamina and the weather, a popular route is to visit only the "Suteshingatake Worship Site," which can be viewed from the temple grounds.

[Trivia]
This is the place where legend has it that when the young boy Mao (later known as Kobo Daishi Kukai) threw himself off a cliff, saying, "I will abandon myself if my wish is not granted," Shaka Nyorai appeared and saved him. Since then, the cliff has been known as "Suteshingatake," the mountain as "Gahaishiyama," and the temple as "Doushakji." Along the way, you'll also find the miraculous spring water "Yanagi no Shimizu," which has long been said to heal illnesses.
