This historical museum in Kochi City is adjacent to Kochi Castle. You can learn more about the history and culture of the Tosa clan during the Meiji Restoration and enjoy valuable materials and special exhibitions.
Kochi Prefectural Kochi Castle History Museum is a history museum located in the center of Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, right next to the Otemon Gate of Kochi Castle. It holds and exhibits many valuable materials related to the history and culture of Kochi Prefecture from the Middle Ages to modern times, with a focus on historical materials related to the Yamauchi family, the lords of the Tosa domain. The museum building has a modern design that takes into consideration the scenery of Kochi Castle, and is a must-see facility for tourists who want to learn about Kochi's history.

The greatest attraction of this museum is that you can learn about Kochi's history in depth while being integrated with Kochi Castle. Inside the museum, the turbulent era from the establishment of the Tosa domain to the Meiji Restoration period at the end of the Edo period, and the progress of Kochi leading up to modern times are clearly introduced through various exhibits, videos, and explanatory panels. In particular, the armor, swords, and art and crafts handed down by the Yamauchi family, the lords of the Tosa domain, are worth seeing, and you can experience the life and culture of the samurai of that time.

[Hidden gem]

The permanent exhibitions and special exhibitions are popular, but the museum shop inside the building is a hidden gem where you can find history-related goods and souvenirs unique to Kochi. You can also get a close-up view of Kochi Castle from the museum's windows, and take photos of the castle tower and the museum together.

In the northern area, you will also find the Kochi Prefectural Literature Museum and Kochi Manga BASE.

Kochi Manga BASE is a manga culture information center inside the Kochi Prefectural Archives. On the first floor, you can browse about 12,000 books from the 1980s to the latest for free, and there is also a wide selection of Manga Koshien works on display. In the Manga Exchange Room on the third floor, digital drawing experiences and classes using tablets are held, and you can also enjoy taking commemorative photos with characters using an AR app.
